EBLI Tutoring

Evidence-Based Literacy Instruction that teaches how the English spelling system works

What Is EBLI?

EBLI (Evidence-Based Literacy Instruction) is an approach for teaching reading, writing and spelling that allows children to make their own connections and use self-teaching to recognize how the English code actually works. Rather than relying on memorization, guessing, or learning rules with many exceptions, EBLI gives children a clear, logical framework for understanding why spelling works the way it does.

Developed from decades of research into how the brain learns to read, EBLI helps children — especially those with dyslexia — build strong decoding and encoding skills that transfer to all reading and writing tasks, which they can utilize for the rest of their lives.

EBLI generates faster progress and although challenging, requires a lower cognitive load than many other methods.

How Tutoring Works

At Clever Bees Tutoring, all sessions are provided in-person or online and 1-on-1, for children ages 4 and up. This individualized approach ensures your child receives focused attention tailored to their specific needs and learning pace.

Your child's certified EBLI educator will assess their current reading level and create a personalized plan that targets the specific areas where they need support. Sessions are structured, engaging, and designed to build skills progressively.

Because every child learns differently, the 1-on-1 format allows instruction to be adapted in real time — moving faster through concepts your child grasps quickly and spending more time on areas that need reinforcement.

Benefits Compared to Traditional Reading Instruction

Many traditional approaches to reading instruction fall short for many children, especially those with dyslexia. EBLI addresses the gaps left by phonics-only programs, sight word memorization, and guessing strategies.

  • Unlike phonics-only approaches, EBLI teaches the complete spelling system — including how same sounds may be represented with different spellings, and how same spellings can represent different sounds.
  • Instead of memorizing hundreds of sight words, children learn the logic behind spellings so they can read and spell unfamiliar words independently, and use flexible thinking to determine the right choice.
  • EBLI eliminates the need for guessing strategies (like looking at pictures or skipping words), replacing them with reliable decoding skills.
  • Children gain confidence quickly because they understand the "why" behind reading, not just the "what".
  • The EBLI approach creates faster movement to more complicated words, language and texts. The whole reason for intervention is to get children to a point where they can choose their own selections and read about what interests them, enjoying authentic texts like novels, poetry, and non-fiction.
  • Skills learned through EBLI are transferable — once a child understands the system, they can apply it to any new word they encounter.
  • EBLI is backed by research showing significant gains in reading accuracy, fluency, and comprehension for struggling readers.
